Symbolic date – 28 February 2013, 1st anniversary

The third Optional Protocol to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (OP3CRC) on a Communications Procedure was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 19 December 2011 and opened for signature and ratification on 28 February 2012 in Geneva, in parallel to the UN Human Rights Council.

Twenty States showed commitment to children’s rights and signed the OP3CRC at the ceremony: Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Finland, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Maldives, Mali, Montenegro, Morocco, Peru, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Uruguay.

As of 16 October 2012 (updated numbers), there are 35 signatures – as Albania, Andorra, Argentina, Cape Verde, Cyprus, Liechtenstein, Madagascar, Malta, Mauritius, Paraguay, Romania, Senegal, Thailand, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey joined the first signatories – and 2 States Parties: Gabon and Thailand.
